Day Trip to Tromsø, Paris of the North
Tromsø is a lively and cosmopolitan city on Norway’s Arctic coast. Known as the “Paris of the North,” it’s full of culture, dramatic scenery, and northern charm. You’ll need a private car or book the local Kilpistaxi for a one-day trip, as public transportation between Kilpisjärvi and Tromsø requires an overnight stay in the city.
Driving to Tromsø from Kilpisjärvi
From the village of Kilpisjärvi, drive north across the Norwegian border. Just before Skibotn, turn left and follow the scenic coastal road along the Lyngenfjord, passing the villages of Hatteng and Oteren.
At Nordkjosbotn, turn right toward Tromsø. As you approach the city, you’ll have two options: cross the dramatic Tromsø Bridge or take the undersea tunnel. The city center is located on an island.

Arctic Cathedral
Before crossing the bridge, stop at the Arctic Cathedral, which is one of Tromsø’s best-known landmarks. Tromsø’s city center sits on its own island. A network of tunnels beneath the city helps manage traffic. The easiest way to explore is to drive across the bridge and park near the waterfront.
